Illo: Raymond Carver What We Talk About When We Talk About Love

I recommend getting ahold of the Library of America’s edition of Carver’s Collected Stories. It includes Carver’s original manuscript of What We Talk About…, titled Beginners, before it was butchered by editor Gordon Lish, who cut the stories down as much as 50%. The editing created the stark, staccato style that Carver is unfortunately known for, but cut out much of the humanity in the stories.
